Universal Mardi Gras… a taste of New Orleans without the 12 hour drive

Universal-Studios-Mardi-GrasHi Orlando Daters! Let me quickly introduce myself. My name is Autumn and I am a 'born and raised' Floridian. I have been living in Orlando for about six years now.

I will be writing with my boyfriend, Ryan. Together we both have worked at four theme parks in the area, which is why we have decided to give you the inside scoop for dates theme park related (and occasionally other things we love too!).

First up on the list is Universal Mardi Gras!

If you have never experienced this event you are definitely missing out. In fact, it was one of our very first dates. It's a taste of New Orleans without the 12 hour drive.

They have music, food and yes… beads, beads, beads. Universal Mardi Gras is included with admission to Universal Studios (unlike some theme park events, which require a separate ticket). Festivities start in the evening and begin with the opening of the "French Quarter" where you can sample New Orleans cuisine (try the beignets!) and listen to live jazz musicians. Walking around are also performers on stilts and in festive costumes, so be sure to have your camera ready.

At around 7:45pm, the parade begins and there are lots of floats and beads… an experience that makes you feel like you've been transported to Bourbon street.

Are you a passholder? GET A CHANCE TO THROW BEADS ON THE FLOATS! Go to this website and apply to be on a float (must register a week in advance).

After the parade, stay out and watch the concert. The line-up includes Lifehouse, Demi Levato, and Matchbox Twenty. You can see the schedule of performers here.

Don't want to spend $ on a ticket? Not a season pass holder? That's ok! They extend the party into CityWalk where most of the restaurants and clubs are also celebrating the Mardi Gras festivities.

Parking is FREE for FL Residents in the evenings as well.

Laissez les bons temps rouler… Let the good times roll!
