Four women make candles at Artifact for girls' night out

Research shows that couples benefit from experiencing new things together. One way to keep the spark alive is to enjoy fun, interactive date nights. And speaking of spark… you can heat things up on date night by candle making at Artifact Candle Foundry.

Candle making is likewise awesome for girls’ night out. And that’s the approach I took when researching Artifact for this review. Artifact is co-owned by a brother and sister team so, apparently, candle making is also an ideal bonding activity for adult siblings!

JW Marriott Bonnet Creek Spa

Artifact Candle Foundry

Artifact opened its first location in Thornton Park in 2019. A second site, in Winter Garden, followed in 2022. At both locations, reservations are not required but highly recommended. But let me reiterate… do make reservations, especially if you have your heart set on a specific time on the weekend.

Make reservations online to secure a 50-minute “Candle Pouring Experience.” These bookings require a $10 per person fee; and this amount is later applied to your final, day-of bill in studio.

Candle Making Process at Artifact Candle Foundry

Along with three girlfriends, I tried candle making at the Thornton Park location on a rainy day. Upon entering, I thought the studio appeared modern and simplistic with clean lines. Artsy indeed!

We were greeted by friendly staff members who easily checked us in and directed us to sit on four stools at the candle bar. Our candle specialist, Kate, gave us the ‘how-to’ run down; then, we got right to the hands-on fun.

Step 1: Scent Selection

We were directed to explore the wall that exhibited roughly 60 different candle scents. Each display candle was labeled by name and, so, we each just picked one up at a time to give the candles sniff tests.

We were told to choose three to four aromas to be combined for a personalized candle. As I sniffed, I jotted down my preferred scents on the provided sheet of paper.

The candle specialist then helped me narrow down my choices from six to three fragrances. Kate did so by gently puffing essential oils near my nose so I could smell the unique scent combinations. I’m a gal that enjoys beachy vibes so I blended Coconut, Pink Sugar and Seabreeze.

However, my pals more so went with savory, earthy aromas, like Rosemary and Cashmere. Artifact has diverse options, including seasonal selections. Some scents are fresh and clean (i.e., Bamboo, Cucumber, Jasmine); others are cocktail inspired (i.e., champagne, grapefruit, hops), and there are also warm notes (i.e., baked bread, chai tea, coffee bean).

Step 2: Jar Selection

Artifact also displays its numerous candle jar options. Choose your own size and color. The size determines if the candle will have one, two or three wicks.

I chose a pretty pink iridescent jar. Whereas my friends chose a basic white with gold lid.

Step 3: Mixing & Pouring

Next, we measured out the ratio of scented oils and blend them together with liquified wax. Do pour and stir slowly and steadily to minimize air bubbles.

If you wish to customize the color of your candle wax, you may also stir in a hue during this step.

Step 4: Naming

Perhaps you’re not into labels, but this label is uniquely personal. Because your candle is one-of-a-kind, just like your relationship, you get to name your candle. Maybe the term of endearment that you call your lover…?

Step 5: Setting & Cooling

Once you’re done mixing and pouring, the candle specialist will center the wicks. Artifact requires a two-hour setting period. So, while you wait, embark on the second part of your date night or girls' night out.

Need a suggestion on what to do while you wait? If you’re candle making at Artifact Thornton Park, dine at F&D Cantina or Soco. Pssst… Soco has bottomless mimosas during Sunday brunch. Artifact Winter Garden is on a side street off historic Plant Street which is home to Plant Street Market and the Winter Garden Farmer’s Market.

Why Candle Making at Artifact is a Great Date Night

Candle making is a great date night for those just starting to connect or date. This activity eliminates any awkward pauses while one’s chewing and it also shows creativity.

For those in an established relationship, know that candle making can be romantic during the creation process and, of course, later with the burn.

Use candles to let aromatherapy naturally put you two in great moods! FYI, vanilla is believed to be arousing; lavender is soothing; and peppermint can stimulate.

Do avoid fragrances that are not pleasant to your significant other. For example, I’m a bit sensitive to strong florals, like lavender.

And candle making is a great date night because the final product can be enjoyed repeatedly. Think about an at-home spa experience or bedroom bliss!

Know Before You Go

Time commitment

The active in-studio creation process typically requires 30-45 minutes. Then, the candle will set for an additional two hours. You can pick up your candle on the same day once two hours from pour time has elapsed. Otherwise pick up on the following day. Artifact generously hold candles for up to a month.

Materials

Artifact candles are hand-poured using a soy blend wax, cotton wicks, and premium fragrance oils. This allows for a clean-burning candle that, on average, burns for 60 hours. Artifact says its products are free of heavy metals, parabens, or other contaminants.

Additionally, Artifact offers flameless options, including Reed Diffusers and Premium Fragrance Oil.

Pricing

Cost is dependent on the personalization, including size, style, added color, etc. Candles typically range $35-$70. For reference, my creation totaled $67.11 (including tax and the $10 booking fee).

So, $67 seems extravagant for a candle, but I really enjoyed the experience. I would gladly pay for a future candle making experience and recommend this to couples, friends, siblings, etc.

FYI, if you bring back your used candle jar to be repurposed or recycled, you'll get $2 off your next purchase.

Artifact accepts credit card payments only.

Events

Artifact books private parties. This venue may work for bridal showers, bachelorette parties, baby showers, or birthday parties.

Additionally, Artifact hosts special events; for example, succulent and candle workshops. These events are posted on Facebook and other social platforms.

Restrictions

Candles must be made using Artifact’s materials. Outside jars and oils are not permitted. Outside food and beverages are also frowned upon.
